Third Annual Ed-Gaming Competition Supports Mathematics Education for Elementary, Middle and High School Students

Honolulu, HI -- (SBWire) -- 02/23/2016 --DimensionU, Inc. announced results today from its 2016 Hawaii Math Games Competition, held Friday, February 19, 2016 at the University of Hawaii – West Oahu through a collaborative effort with the Holomua GEAR UP Program and 21st Century Community Learning Centers. The 3rd annual event kicked off with an Oli Officiant, followed by the Campbell High School Color Guard processional and opening remarks from Hawaii DOE Deputy State Superintendent, Mr. Stephen Shatz and UH-West Oahu Chancellor, Dr. Doris Ching. In addition, Complex Area Superintendents, Ms. Ann Mahi from Nanakuli-Waianae, Ms. Ruth Silberstein, from Kaimuki-McKinley-Roosevelt and Mr. Chad Farias from Kau-Keaau-Pahoa also offered opening remarks and supportive words to help kick off the day's event. Papa John's Pizza from the Leeward Coast was the official lunch sponsor, providing pizza for the 200+ attendees.

Eighteen elementary, middle and high school teams from four Hawaii Department of Education Complex Areas on Oahu, competed in the tournament. The student teams went head to head in competition, using the DimensionU Multiplayer Gaming platform, that combines the challenge of first person, multiplayer video gaming with the rigor of mathematics. Winning teams for the Elementary Division were: 1st Place – Honowai Elementary (Team 2), 2nd Place – August Ahrens Elementary (Team 1), and 3rd Place – Nanaikapono Elementary (Team 1). Winning teams for the Intermediate Division were: 1st Place - Nanakuli High & Intermediate School (Team 1), 2nd Place - Waianae Intermediate School, and 3rd Place – Nanakuli High & Intermediate School (Team 2). Winning teams for the High School Division were: 1st Place - Waianae High (Team 1) and 2nd Place - Waianae High (Team 2). All first place winning team members each received a brand new Amazon Fire tablet. The top three teams in all divisions were also awarded medals and all participants from the day's event received an official 2016 DimensionU Hawai'i Math Games t-shirt. Congratulations to all students who participated.

To close out the day, fifteen teacher chaperones participated in a gaming competition just for educators, surrounded by the support and assistance of their students. Congratulations to Ariel Maranan, a teacher from August Ahrens Elementary School who took 1st Place in the event.
