In early January, Palmer Trinity School (PTS) launched a joint program, via Skype, with The Chadwick School in Los Angeles to study the crucial role Scottish history plays in the political identity of 21st century Great Britain. This independent online study course, Scotland: Rebellion, Colonization and Referendum, was offered through PTS’s History Department for grades 10 and 11, and was taught by associate heads of school Danny Reynolds and Dr. Manjula Salomon, and head of school, Patrick Roberts. The idea sprung from both Reynolds’ and Roberts’ love for Scotland and their Scottish heritage.

We were excited that our students were not only able to work in partnership with The Chadwick School to better understand Scotland's role, past and present, but to have their awareness as global citizens heightened," stated Roberts.

The three sections of the course included the cause and effect of the rebellions by the Scots against the English, the mobilization of the Scots to colonize, and the establishment of the British Empire. The final section reviewed the Scottish independence referendum of 2014 and the rise of the Scottish National Party.

In addition, the course offered individualized interactive learning in collaboration with students from The Chadwick School. Students met with faculty periodically to review their progress, and on three Saturdays during the semester all students came together for an online class. Completion of the course will earn students a half history credit at PTS and a history credit from Colorado State University.

The course ended the week of May 30, followed by an experiential travel component to Scotland from June 27- July 4, 2016 for a combined total of 21 students.
