Pasadena, CA -- (SBWire) -- 12/22/2010 -- The private sector in New York City lost around 3,900 jobs in November after gaining 9,600 jobs in October.

The total job losses for the city are around 7,300 jobs if government jobs are included. The data includes adjustments made for seasonal changes. This brings the jobless rate of the city to 9.1% for November.

The job losses were mainly in retail (5,900) and construction, which continued its nationwide trend of cutbacks. In spite of the job losses in November, New York City still leads the country in creating new jobs. The city has added around 57,600 jobs from January to November this year.

The unemployment rate for the state of New York was 8.3% in November, the same as it was in October. The total number of unemployed New Yorkers went up to 799,500. New York has only been able to create 78,000 private sector jobs in the last 12 months. Cuts in government programs resulted in 40,000 job losses. But education and healthcare services were able to add 31,000 jobs.

The main reasons that the jobless are having a hard time finding employment in New York and throughout the country is that there are five applicants for every one opening. CEO A.
