Huge Urban Farm Sets Lofty Ideals

Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire -- (SBWire) -- 07/25/2016 --Atop of an abandoned 1950s block of offices, tomatoes, micro greens and vegetables are being grown in what is being tipped as Europe's largest urban farm. The abandoned offices were once the mainstay of operations for the Dutch telecommunications giant Phillips. Now a sea of fresh greens can be seen high above the building located in The Hague.

The roof space boasts a whopping 1,200 square metres where all of the produce is grown. With hydroponics leading the way for the most sustainable and simple method for use absolutely anywhere, there is no reason not to grown all over the most unusual of spaces and of course the benefits of growing produce in this way are untold. It reduces the carbon footprint of transportation of the produce, particularly when being distributed locally.

The firm behind the green space are called UF002 De Schilde and their key aim is deliver the produce to some 900 local families, restaurants and schools with circa 50,000 tonnes of fresh greens each year.

A spokesperson for Grown Up Hydroponics said "We are always over the moon when we hear about urban farms and projects which further aid in reducing the carbon footprint and aiding in quite literally, a greener future. We hope to see so many more inspiring and groundbreaking urban projects like this come to manifest all over the globe."
