New Commercial Building Designed by Architects Murdock Solon Is a Welcome Boon for Brooklyn's Local Economy

New York, NY -- (SBWire) -- 09/14/2016 --The neighborhood in Gravesend, Brooklyn, is evolving. As a result, demand is rising for new commercial and retail spaces in the area. One such example is an ambitious development at 1601 Kings Highway.

The plans involved the demolition of some two-storey buildings. With the space cleared, construction workers began work earlier in 2016. When the project gets completed, it will offer a welcome boon for Brooklyn's economy.

Modern commercial and retail spaces

The building project involves the creation of a 68,000-square-foot building. It's a five-storey building that boasts retail units on the ground and first floors. Commercial office space will occupy the remaining three floors.

Murdock Solon are the New York City architects tasked with designing and overseeing this project. Part of their designs include tall floor-to-ceiling windows for the retail spaces. This will give stores a more open, light and airy feel to them. Meanwhile, the offices are set back from the retail units to maintain the streetwall.

The project will occupy most of East 16th and East 17th streets. The aim is to offer new developments to an evolving Brooklyn landscape. Underneath the building, there will be space for up to 25 vehicles to park.

The Kings Highway development is a short walking distance away from a subway station. That makes it ideal for people wishing to visit or work in the building that don't want to drive. The subway station serves the B line which runs from Bedford Park Boulevard to Brighton Beach.

It also serves the Q line, covering stations from Astoria - Ditmars Boulevard to 57th Street - Seventh Avenue.

Sheepshead Bay, the area where the development is taking place, is an untapped market. Commercial projects that have been completed in the area were much welcomed by residents. This new development at Kings Highway will no doubt prove to be just as big a hit.

Fresh, innovative design that blends in with existing local architecture

One of the main concerns residents and business leaders had was the design of the building. They were worried that the new development would not be sympathetic to neighboring structures.

Architects Murdock Solon have explored facade patterns that weave into the local existing fabric. The result is a construction that looks modern but not out of place to nearby buildings.
