Leading PA Automotive Repair Shop Explains Antilock Brakes
Yardley, PA -- (SBWire) -- 09/27/2016 --Big Oak Citgo, the top auto mechanic shop in Yardley, PA, released a write-up on their website explaining the importance of antilock brake systems (ABS). According to the company, properly operating brakes are more integral to drivers' safety than any other component of a vehicle.
ABS systems work by monitoring speed sensors that are mounted at each wheel. When the brake pedal is applied and a wheel begins to skid, the ABS system takes over braking control and pulses the braking effort at the wheel that is beginning to skid. This serves to prevent wheel lockup and skidding, allowing the driver directional control.
Major components include wheel speed sensors, Hydraulic pump and valve systems, and a computer based controller necessary to make braking decisions. A yellow warning light is visible in the dashboard to warn drivers in the event of system failure.
Big Oak Citgo's article urged drivers to keep a few things in mind if their vehicles have ABS. For one, they encouraged those who have never operated a car with the system before to take their car to an empty parking lot and practice applying the brakes at speeds over 10 miles per hour (ABS does not kick in at lower speeds). The write-up also reminded drivers that their brake pedal will likely rapidly pulsate when the ABS is on, and to not take their foot off the brake when they experience such sensations.
