Pre-Bariatric Surgery Diet: Preparing for Gastric Surgery Abroad
Gastric surgery changes lives for many – however, not all patients know that while diet after surgery is necessary, pre bariatric surgery diet is not less important.
Vilnius, Lithuania -- (SBWire) -- 12/22/2016 --To be a suitable candidate for gastric surgery, patient's BMI (body mass index) needs to be at least 40, while in some cases and specific conditions BMI of 35 might be considered.
For patients with BMI of 40 or more, gastric sleeve or gastric bypass abroad would usually be more suitable options, while for those with BMI of 39 or lower, gastric plication would usually be the best option – all of this discussed with and advised by the operating surgeon. Gastric plication provides the same results as gastric sleeve or gastric bypass surgery, just with the plication surgery, no part of the stomach is being taken out – therefore lower risks of complications and lower price for this surgery.
For all gastric surgeries – gastric sleeve, bypass or gastric plication, it is important to be well prepared – and not only get the necessary doctor consultations and tests done, but prepare for surgery physically, well in advance.
The preparation that is needed – is to lose 2-3 kg of weight prior to coming for the surgery, as close to the surgery date as possible. For all gastric surgeries, it is absolutely necessary for the surgery to go well technically – because the fat layer that is formed around the liver needs to get thinner before the surgery. 3 kilograms is what patients should aim at – it won't be a huge problem if it's slightly less, but patients should do their best to drop those few kilograms before the surgery.
Pre Bariatric Surgery Diet:
The most common way is to not exceed 1300-1400 calories per day, additionally to not having meals after 7 pm, having a very light dinner (fresh/steamed vegetables, cottage cheese, omelet, lean meat) and drinking at least 8 glasses of water per day. The less carbohydrates (sweets, fruits, grains, breads and such) are consumed on evenings, the better the results are usually achieved.
At Kardiolita Hospital, gastric surgeries are performed by the general and bbdominal surgeon Dr. MD Nerijus Kaselis, who has been performing bariatric surgeries regularly for the past 10+ years. At Kardiolita Hospital, gastric surgery prices start at 4500 Eur, which is significantly lower than in other European countries and therefore is a huge deciding factor for patients from abroad.
