SAFE Collecting Supplies Advises Numismatics to Check Pennies: They Could Be Worth More Than One Cent
Doylestown, PA -- (SBWire) -- 08/24/2017 --SAFE® Collecting Supplies, the leading supplier of high-quality protection and collection products, advises fellow numismatics to check their coin cases for two particular pennies that may be worth much more than expected. At a recent auction, a penny minted in 1792 sold for $211,500, while a 1943 bronze Lincoln penny sold for $282,000. They are said to be two of the rarest coins in the country.
The 1792 penny was minted soon after the birth of our nation, so long ago that a majority of people wouldn't recognize it as a penny. This coin hasn't been sold since 1890 when it went for $75, which by today's standards would equal around $2,000. It was found somewhere in Europe, where it was owned by the famous numismatic Lorin G. Parmelee.
People already collect some 1943 Lincoln pennies because they were made of zinc-coated steel. During World War II, they needed the copper to make shell casings. These pennies are referred to as "steelies" by collectors and are worth up to $10.
However, there were a handful of pennies that were made out of bronze by mistake. These are worth much more. Some bronze planchets from 1942 got stuck in the hopper at the San Francisco mint. Eventually, they were somehow freed and subsequently stamped into pennies.
