Medical Negligence Claim Brought Against Hospital for Girl's Glue Injection

The well known Great Ormond Street children’s hospital is being sued for medical negligence following allegations that an operation left an 11 year old girl with extensive brain damage. A doctor has been accused of injecting glue into Maisha Najeeb’s brain.

Leicester, Englad -- (SBWire) --05/24/2011 --Maisha Najeeb sustained extensive brain damage which has restricted her ability to move and caused blindness in one eye. Maisha had a routine operation in the hospital in June 2010 to remove an arteriovenous malformation (AVM) in her skull. AVM is a condition whereby arteries and veins get tangled; it is a very rare condition. Despite this condition, Maisha was able to live a normal life.

The medical claim is a result of an accident that took place during an operation to remove the AVM at Great Ormond Street hospital. Allegedly the accident happened when two syringes became mixed up in the operating theatre as they were not correctly labelled. The documents supporting Maisha’s action for medical compensation allege that one injection contained glue which was designed to treat her blood vessels and the other injection contained a dye and aimed to highlight the blood flow in her head.

The claim has been lodged at the High Court in London which includes a medical report pertaining details of her mental and physical disabilities. The legal case will be based on the question: how much of Maisha’s brain damage was due to the mistake of injecting glue into the claimant or, was caused from her existing condition?

The girl’s family claim that it was the injection of the glue that deprived her of her mental and physical functions. The family reports that Maisha is now in a wheelchair and needs help with all her basic functions.

The hospital intends to defend the claim. A spokeswoman for Great Ormond Street has stated "The Trust immediately apologised sincerely to Maisha and her family. We would like to reiterate these apologies. The trust has undertaken a comprehensive investigation of Maisha’s care, and implemented changes to improve our systems and processes."
