Old bumpers from end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) are being recycled by Mazda for use in their new technology to be made into raw materials for their new cars.
Long Island, NY -- (SBWIRE) -- 08/29/2011 -- Bright Bay Mazda is excited to announce that Mazda has developed an industry-first recycling technology that takes old bumpers from end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) and recycles them into raw materials for new car bumpers. The innovative technology by Mazda is a major step in reducing waste and building greener vehicles.
Mazda’s new recycling process is known as thermal recycling. Mazda breaks down the old bumpers into a residue which then gets thrown into an incinerator to recollect the heat energy. The recycled plastic is projected to be 10% of the new bumper.
Mazda’s philosophy of fuel efficiency without reducing performance has been a constant guide through the development of Mazda vehicles. Mazda also places a major emphasis on parts that build the car aside from the engine. By using resources better, Mazda can have greener vehicles on two levels, fuel efficiency and material efficiency.
Bumpers are a major car part that uses plastic in Mazda vehicles so finding a way to minimize plastic use was a goal of Mazda’s. They began the steps to a new bumper recycling process way back in 1992. In 1992, Mazda began collecting damaged bumpers and recycled them to be used for the undercovers of Mazda cars.
Mazda then moved to a new system in the early 2000’s that could strip the paint of old bumpers and developed a plastic recycling process that made the plastic just as strong as the new plastic. Mazda then would take the recycled plastic and use it to reinforce new bumpers.
Because of Mazda’s early efforts in recycling bumpers and discovering issues with paint and the removal of metal from the bumpers, Mazda improved bumpers in new cars to make it easier to recycle them in the future. Mazda has seen a significant improvement in ease of recycling the bumpers because of the changes to bumpers through the years. Now Mazda can proudly say that they are the first to develop an automated bumper recycling process that uses old bumpers for new bumper material.
Mazda stays committed to developing the most-advanced technology to improve fuel and material efficiency.
