In honor of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, the Prostate Cancer Awareness Project (PCAP) successfully hosted their first Prostate Cancer Pony Express motorcycle ride to Capitol Hill to deliver to the US Congress their message.
Manhattan Beach, CA -- (SBWIRE) --10/04/2011 -- On Sunday, September 18, 2011, the Prostate Cancer Awareness Project (PCAP) successfully hosted their inaugural Prostate Cancer Pony Express motorcycle ride to Capitol Hill in Washington DC to deliver to the US Congress their message concerning the critical importance of prostate cancer research funding.
On that historic Sunday morning, 15 enthusiastic Prostate Cancer Pony Express riders left Mount Vernon, VA in route to Washington DC. Participants proudly represented the states of Florida, California, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and North and South Carolina.
There were several remarkable highlights on the ride. A memorial service at the Congressional Cemetery was held in honor of the 1.4 million unnamed men who have died from prostate cancer since President Richard M. Nixon declared the war on cancer in 1971. The ride also included a stop at Capitol Hill, and group photos in front of the White House fence where riders joined with supporters of MaleCare and the DC Cancer Consortium. Participants finished the ride by attending the Zero Prostate Cancer Summit and visiting their elected officials on Capitol Hill.
The 2012 Prostate Cancer Pony Express will ride again on September 9, 2012, to coincide with the Zero Prostate Cancer Summit.
Prostate Cancer Awareness Project president, Robert Hess, an eight-year prostate cancer survivor and service disabled veteran, led this year’s ride. Hess explained to Kathy Stewart of WTOP 103.5 FM, “It's all about the message. The Pony Express carried letters; we're carrying the prostate cancer awareness message.” He believes next year will see at least 1,000 riders in Washington, DC. The 2012 Prostate Cancer Pony Express will begin at Daytona Beach on March 17, 2012, travel through all 50 states, and arrive in Washington, DC on September 9th.
The PCAP is currently seeking businesses and organizations interested in partnering with the Prostate Cancer Pony Express.
