While high frequency trading continues to expand in Asia, many cautious investors in the trading centers of Asia remain skeptical. High frequency traders have received a lot of flak for being the principal instigators of the May 2010 United States flash crash, when the Dow Jones plunged nine percent in minutes. However, speed traders are not to blame for a recent smaller flash crash in Germany.

According to a recent report from The Wall Street Journal’s Jacob Bunge, Germany's main exchange operator has found that a miniature "flash crash" in late August—in which stock-index futures dived 4% before recovering in a matter of minutes—was simply the result of a barrage of selling by financial institutions, and not the handiwork of superfast computerized traders.

So-called high-frequency trading firms drew suspicions following the gyration, but an internal report by German exchange operator Deutsche Börse AG, completed this month but not widely circulated, determined that such participants' rapid buying and selling actually helped absorb some of the market shock.
