Since 2006, the Virginia-based non-profit organization has compiled an annual list of the vehicles that merit its "Top Safety Pick" award. To qualify for the award, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety examines each model with various tests. The Institute rates vehicles on a scale of good, acceptable, marginal, and poor based on the performance in high-speed front and side crash tests, a rollover test, in addition to evaluations of seat/head restraints.

This year, the 2012 Toyota Camry won its first-ever Top Safety Pick. The midsize sedan underwent a few safety improvements for the 2012 model year, which helped it earn the approval ratings of the IIHS. Some of these safety features include a class-leading 10 standard airbag system, Toyota’s Star Safety System, and a Smart Stop Technology brake-override system. The Start Safety System is made up of vehicle stability control, traction control, anti-lock braking system, electronic brake-force distribution, and brake assist.

The new Yaris also received its first IIHS award, due to improved roof strength and head restraints. Back in September, the National highway Traffic Safety Administration performed one test on the 2012 Yaris, and the minicar received four out of five stars on the rollover test. New safety features for 2012 are: nine standard airbags, including a knee airbag and roll-sensing airbags, electronic brake-ford distribution and Toyota’s Smart Stop Technology as in the Camry.
