SECUDE Launches its Own Green IT Initiative

Emmetten, NW -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/23/2009 -- SECUDE, in its own modest way, has taken the initiative to tackle energy consumption effectively.

“I live responsibly on this planet. Whether politicians the world over are concerned or not, I am concerned about global climate change. As this is my children’s planet too, I wish to be proactive. At the modest level of my organization, I have launched a Green IT initiative that will reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions by not less than 30%,” says SECUDE’s CEO and Founder, Dr. Heiner Kromer.

Going Green
The Copenhagen Summit may not have achieved what was hoped for. However, SECUDE, in its own modest way, has taken the initiative to tackle energy consumption effectively. SECUDE maintains two large server facilities: the primary server in Switzerland with over 70 servers plus auxiliary equipment and a second server serving as back up in Germany. Those servers and related hardware as well as necessary air cooling systems require significant amounts of electricity consumption. Investing into greener means of energy consumption will help SECUDE reduce its overall energy needs by a whopping 30%.

Redesigning Ventilation the Smart Way
It was identified that ventilation utilized a major amount of resource to run the various coolers in the server rooms. As per the new design, all servers will be enclosed in an air-tight room to reduce the amount of cool air required to cool the systems. An array of venting ducts bringing in cool air currents will be redirected from the rear, where it is required most, to the front server panels. The total volume of coolant air will be reduced two-thirds from its current requirement. The air that is warmed after passing through the servers will be directed into adjacent offices for heating during winter time. Automatic sensors for measuring outside and inside air temperatures will shut down the venting system when needed.

Additionally, in a related policy, SECUDE will reduce car allowances. Employees will be provided additional public transportation passes with the hope to lower CO2 emissions!

IT business is considered responsible for 2% of global CO2 emissions. A recent survey reveals that within the next decade new IT technologies would contribute reducing 5.8 billion tons of CO2 emissions per year, which is approximately 1.65% of 2007 emissions, mostly through new energy management systems within high consumption domains such as logistics, construction, and transportation.
