Kansas City, MO -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/08/2014 -- Before the development of dental implants, a patient with a missing tooth or teeth had only two options: either get a dental bridge or do nothing about it. Neither solution was ideal, as dental bridges require one more tooth on either side of the missing tooth to be sacrificed, while ignoring the problem meant having to put up with poorer oral function, diet and general health. Some of the reasons behind tooth loss are poor dental hygiene, periodontal (gum disease), tooth decay, injury or chronic illnesses such as diabetes or cancer. After the socket is cleared of any remaining tooth particles or roots, the 'tooth root' is inserted into the jawbone, where it sits for three to six months until it bonds with the underlying bone.
While the dental implant is incubating, Dr. Busch can prepare a temporary crown to be placed on the 'tooth root' so the patient does not have to feel self-conscious about the gap in their teeth. Once the dental implant has fused with the jawbone, this makeshift crown is replaced with a permanent one. Dr. Busch describes an implant, "It will look and feel like a natural tooth when eating, speaking or smiling. Dental implants can last a lifetime if properly cared for with a strict regimen of brushing, flossing and scheduling regular dental checkups."
