Livingston Manor, NY -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/14/2015 -- Samuel Kovalyov's plan encompasses the best of both worlds.
Mr. Kovalyov lives in Livingston Manor, N.Y., a small town 115 miles north of New York City. For the past four years, he and his family have been constructing what he calls a "self-sustainable sanctuary for humans," a home and small agricultural center (biodome) that will provide food and shelter – totally off the grid.
"Our goal is to use our modern technology and knowledge to reintegrate ourselves into nature," explains Mr. Kovalyov. "We want to take the fear out of the self-sustainable lifestyle and empower and inspire people to take their lives into their own hands. It can be done and we want to prove that it can be done. In this way, people can use their time to directly better their own lives."
The home and biodome will use renewable energy for power and heat. The biodome, a greenhouse for plants and animals that measures 60 feet in diameter, has been carefully designed by a team of engineers and biologists as well as aquaponic and hydroponic system experts. It will provide organic food and enough natural gas to power a generator and any natural gas appliances.
The biodome has room for more than 600 organic and aquaponic fruit and vegetable plants, a host of fresh-water organic fish, gourmet mushroom logs, fresh-water organic clams, and hundreds of gallons of fresh organic compost.
"This is a living symbiotic ecosystem," says Mr. Kovalyov.
It is, however, an expensive proposition. The estimated cost to set up and operate the aquaponic bio-energy greenhouse system is $25,000. The complete construction of a wooden geodesic dome and connecting facility is expected to cost another $50,000. Final construction and landscaping projects will add an additional $25,000 to the total.
In order to generate the $100,000 needed to fully implement this project, Mr. Kovalyov has launched an Indiegogo campaign, which can be viewed at https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/human-integrated-ecological-sanctuary-biodome
The Indiegogo page includes a video, photos and diagrams that explain how the system works.
Donations of any amount are welcome. For a contribution of $1 or more, backers will receive a free tour of the facility. A $100 pledge is good for 10 pounds of organic produce grown in the biodome (shipping included).
For $1,500, you can participate in a weekend retreat at the facility. "You can eat like we eat (mostly raw vegan food), exercise and do yoga with us, learn about sustainability and participate in our seasonal projects," says Mr. Kovalyov.
In addition to providing themselves with a sustainable home, Mr. Kovalyov's family is in the process of incorporating the project as an official non-profit educational facility. Contributions are tax deductible.
