New York, NY -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/31/2014 -- Jessica Pomerantz was watching Comedy Central one night, kicking back and kicking around different ideas. How she could finance her next EP? Studio time in NYC was through the roof. Producers didn’t come free. Suddenly, lightning struck. Instead of the usual straight-from-the-heart sincere crowdfunding video, just one more among the thousands already out there, she decided to shake things up using snarky satire.
The University of California, Berkeley’s Fung Institute for Engineering Leadership estimates the size of the crowdfunding market will hit $3.98 billion per year. But as Geri Stengel writes in Forbes, “Of Indiegogo’s successful campaigns, 42% are run by women. These successful women get more contributions and raise more money per campaign than their male counterparts. “
Pomerantz is hoping it’s true for her. While her songs are emotional and powerful—think Suzanne Vega meets Adele-- her Indiegogo video swerves around her style in spoofing Lady Gaga as a transvestite called Lady Gagme who is obsessed with Jessica's music. A mock “Behind the Music” treatment straight out of Comedy Central lampoons other icons and trends, from Miss America to Brooklyn hipsters.
The laughs are endless and the mockery is relatable. One fan said "It’s music from the heart but this video hits you right between the eyes." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h9rbrRPEvdI
What's not easy to laugh at is Jess's powerful performance and commitment as a singer. A single sample [https://soundcloud.com/starblind] of any of her songs will make this ring true for anyone who puts aside just a few minutes to listen. Noted producer Steve Lillywhite (U2, Rolling Stones, Dave Matthews Band) interviewed Pomerantz on his radio program, later raising eyebrows by attending two of her NYC gigs.
Pomerantz aims to raise funds her first EP with noted NYC producer and songwriter Eren Cannata. Jess knew she needed to collaborate with someone who could help her develop her original songs, arrange them for a full band, and craft a unique and exciting direction for her rising singing career. “Eren and I clicked right away, musically. He’s been in the music world most of his life and our chemistry feels natural.”
If Jess reaches her crowdfunding goal she'll be able to get back into the studio with Eren to record four new songs. As is common for artists today, exceeding her crowdfunding goal, she'll be able to pay for CD pressing, touring, and promotion to boost every aspect of her EP.
Dave Kusek, founder and former CEO of Berkleemusic, the world’s largest music school, (now of New Artist Model) says, “In the past, the only way to get an album recorded was to have a record label throw money at you. The cost of recording was so high that many bands simply couldn’t afford it themselves. These days, things are a little different….crowdfunding is the obvious answer.”
Backers to this crowdfunding campaign can enjoy exclusive early access to the new EP, a special bonus track, live cover songs, a private performance by Jess and even a live show and after party event.
This crowdfunding campaign ends on November 21, 2014.
