London, England -- (SBWIRE) -- 11/18/2015 -- Transport for London has recently put forward a compulsory wait rule on Uber vehicles in the city - a proposed measure which will cost Uber drivers up to £19m a year, according to the firm. This emphasizes continuing tensions between transport providers in the city, with passengers fearing ever-rising costs.
Uber is a transportation network company which allows clients to book a taxi, for example, using their Smartphone through a specially designed App. This method of travel has been growing in popularity in London, though it has been controversial – especially regarding how it affects other taxi firms. The measure being introduced by Transport for London means that after they have booked their ride, passengers are not allowed to enter an Uber vehicle until five minutes after this.
The 'five minute rule', as it is coming to be known, is under consultation by Transport For London until the 23rd of December. This means a period of tension and uncertainty until then, which many passengers worry will affect their own travel plans – with the prospect of rising costs.
