Miami, FL -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/12/2018 -- Per a National Safety Commission poll, more than seventy percent of Americans are unfamiliar with their state laws regarding when to "Move Over". There have been several instances where law enforcement officers have been injured because of drivers not adhering to the rules. While the majority of drivers know that they must pull over to allow emergency vehicles to pass, when it comes to switching lanes for the purpose of maintaining a safe distance, there remains a large degree of driver ignorance.

If utility service vehicles, emergency vehicles, or sanitation vehicles are stopped on the roadside, Florida law mandates that drivers must move to another lane. If a driver is unable to change lanes, then he or she must reduce their speed to twenty miles below the speed limit while they pass these vehicles. Although this information regarding the Move Over Act can be found on current Florida driver exams, older drivers may not be as familiar with the law as the laws may not have implemented into the driver's test then.

In 2017, more than 115 crashes resulting in over eighty injuries were a result of drivers not adhering to the Move Over Act. In addition, nearly 17,000 drivers were cited for the same reason. Move Over Act violations can result in fines and a driver may also receive points on their license.
